Uncle Mike Voegele, 1971 The Vietnam / American War (Part 1)
In America we call it The Vietnam war but in Vietnam they call it The American war. Everything is about perspective I suppose. Technically the French started the whole debacle but hey, i’m not here to split hairs. My Uncle Mike was an enigma about it all. He never spoke about his experience in Vietnam in the early 1970’s but he spent three years there on multiple tours. During and after the war he was a decorated helicopter pilot. He never traveled without his vintage Voightländer 35mm camera and documented many of his adventures and misadventures as a captain in the U.S. Army. He shot all his images on 35 mm slide format and I have digitized many of them here for exhibition purposes. Mike passed away 10 years ago in 2015 at the age of 72. He was a one of a kind American hero, a fascinating human being and one hell of a good photographer. More to follow soon…
